Do I Smell Semen?

A Bradford pear tree in bloom is a beautiful sight, but, man, do they stink!  According to Wikipedia, the smell is "similar to a cross between rotting fish and semen."  Having never mixed up that particular concoction, I can't really say if that's accurate.  I can tell you that the one time that Baby Puppy brought a bouquet of pear blossoms into the house, I tossed both dogs outside for excessive flatulence before I discovered the true culprit.  Guess it's a good thing I don't have fish.

oh, my! i'd not have considered that description of the odor. we have an ornamental pear tree here - right near our septic tank. and for two years in a row, i almost called the septic company because of excessive sewer odor. well, finally year 3 i figured out it was the tree. :)

Oh, what a hoot!! I'll be sure to remember this should I ever have cause to consider planting a tree -- apartment owners don't look on that favorably anyway, so I'm certain my landlord will breathe a sigh of relief!! You do know how to make my day, MZ!!!

Wow, would have never thought a pretty bloom like that would leave such an offensive odor! Learn something new every day.

My daughter was just commenting on that the other day. Well, not that exact combination of odors, but the stench in general.

Maybe they meant to say rotting fish semen?

Yikes! so pretty, and yet so stinky. that is probably the weirdest combination of smells I've ever heard of

It is very pretty, but I'll be sure to avoid adding them to any bouquet.
