Review: Courting Cate

Unlike her sweet, flirty younger sister, Cate Miller doesn't have many suitors.  In fact, Cate is determined to remain single.  However, when her father announces that Cate's younger sister will not be allowed to marry until after she marries, Cate reluctantly reconsiders. Unfortunately, her fiery temper has driven away most of the eligible bachelors in Paradise, Pennsylvania.  Fortunately, Pete Treger is new in town.  But, is Pete interested in Cate or in Cate's money?

Leslie Gould's Courting Cate (Bethany House Publishers, 2012) is the first in a new series centering around courtships among the Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  Gould really takes the reader into "modern" Amish life, as well giving the reader a glimpse of a more traditional Amish lifestyle.  I particularly enjoyed learning about the customs surrounding an Amish wedding.

I related to Cate in many ways.  As a girl, Cate was teased and bullied.  As a young woman, she has become defensive and churlish.  Before she can love and be loved, Cate has to overcome her distrust and her deeply held notion that she is unlovable.  I think that that is a task that many of us can relate to.

If you're interested in Amish life or just enjoy a sweet romance, Courting Cate is a very entertaining read.
