As the parent of an elementary school age child, I've read quite a few books about how to help kids learn. Rarely, however, have I found a book as immediately useful as Guinevere Durham's Five Skills Between Confusion and AHA! (Outskirts Press, 2011)
Five Skills Between Confusion and AHA! focuses on the five competencies (logic, critical thinking, problem solving, investigating, and experimenting) and provides concrete examples of how to foster the development of these competencies. The five skills are also examined in the context of different learning styles. It all sounds very complex, but Durham does an outstanding job of breaking down the information and making it accessible to a lay reader.
The day I started reading Five Skills Between Confusion and AHA! I used some of Durham's tips to help me explain summarizing to my daughter. The tips helped tremendously. I can't think of a better recommendation. Five Skills Between Confusion and AHA! is a great resource.
I received a complimentary copy of Five Skills Between Confusion and AHA! to facilitate my review. No other compensation was received. For full disclosure, see the sidebar.

Sounds like a great book, maybe you should recommend it to your daughters teacher and school too. Have a great weekend!
Interesting, thanks for the recommendation.
I'm down with investigating and experimenting. Maybe a little short of a lunchbox on the others. :-P
This sounds like a book I would have appreciated when mine were that age.
Maybe it could help me now since I'm going on 6 haha
I'll have to do a little investigating of my own and see if this is in at the library. Thanks for the review MZ!
I agree with Eileen, sounds like a keeper for the education system and those that work in it.
I watch Are you smarter than a 5th grader and I am happy to say I am just as smart.
I mean, I went to kindergarten 3 times (my son made me sit there) and
did elementary school homework 3 times . High school they keep to themselves but college is fun cause we can sit and discuss philosophy and literature and law.
I can sit here today and say that I was very ejamacated in elementary school.lol but young Moms may need the AHA book lol
nice...in my line of work always looking for good books to share so will check this one out...
I'll have to give this a try!
I believe you'll find our blogs the best. Why dost I speaketh in such jovality and pride? Lemme asketh of thee a question. Dost thou wish unto stayeth here, just and fair liege, on this whorizontal plane? Thot not. God bless you.
