Review: The Mindful Woman

Like many moms (please, don't tell me it's just me), I often feel a bit frantic and overwhelmed. So, when I received a copy of The Mindful Woman: Gentle Practices for Restoring Calm, Finding Balance, and Opening Your Heart (New Harbinger Publications, 2008), by Sue Patton Thoele, to review, I was intrigued. "Restore calm," huh? Yeah, I'm definitely interested!

The theme of The Mindful Woman is "a few mindful moments make a world of difference." In keeping with that theme, Sue Patton Thoele offers sixty-five simple practices to help you focus on the present moment in the midst of a hectic day. Most of the practices are pretty standard: breathe deep, affirm yourself, notice beauty. A few were new to me and really clever (my favorite: "always look for the simple solution"). If you're interested in increasing mindfulness, you will probably find something you can work with here.

Still, there were aspects of the book that I didn't care for. The Mindful Woman includes quite a bit of material about stuff like the law of attraction, angel guides, etc. I prefer my mindfulness straight; hold the New Age chaser, thank you very much. It wasn't a deal breaker for me (I just ignored those sections), but it does keep me from giving the book a strong recommendation. However, if you don't mind picking and choosing, and you're interested in some simple practices for mindful living, The Mindful Woman is worth checking out.

Interesting! I agree with you - I am not into the new age stuff, but if this is at the library I may check it out! :)

"sixty-five simple practices" and does the book tell you when and where you are supposed to fit even one of those practices in? LOL

Still sounds like a good read.

That sounds similar to a book I'm reading now- Buddhism for Mothers of Young Children.

Hmmmmm....serenity??? If this book could help with panic attacks and anxiety then I'm totally game.

So, when my daughter is mouthing me and her friends are destroying the house that I just freaking cleaned and the dogs are fighting and the hubby is sitting on the computer oblivious to all that is going on around him will one of the sixty five simple practices help me not punch someone in the eye????

'Hold the new age chaser.'

That made me do a spit take with really good wine. :-)

I've enjoyed her other books but wasn't aware of this one. Guess I'll be ordering it from Barnes and Noble online and adding it to the stack ... just because. Thanks for sharing.

I left a bit of 'bling' for you at Sacred Ruminations on Sunday ... so if you've not been by yet, be sure to visit when time permits. I've been so busy the last two days I've not been back there to see who's dropped by or to 'notify' anyone until now, but it's all good ... seriously!

Hugs and blessings,
