Despite my ripe old age, I still have my wisdom teeth. All of them. I've had about a dozen appointments to have them surgically removed, but something always came up (pregnancy, my refusal to stop nursing my daughter, my desire to do anything else but have dental surgery).
Now, one of the little bastards has abscessed.
Oh, it hurts. My face is terribly swollen. I look like Marlon Brando. Or, Alvin from the Chipmunks. I can't decide which.
The smart thing to do would be to try to get an emergency appointment with Baby Puppy's dentist. After all, I'm taking her to her dental appointment this morning.
Or, I could rummage around in my medicine cabinet looking for old antibiotics and self-prescribe whatever I have on hand . . .
Any bets as to what I'm going to do?
Hey, I said I still had my wisdom teeth, I didn't say that they were making me any smarter!

So, Why Aren't I Smarter?

Gargle with peroxide, that's what worked for me when I was pregnant and couldn't get mine pulled. I still need to get the last two ripped out.
I don't have any suggestions on the tooth -- just ouch! My teeth ache in sympathy.
Ouch! I need to make dentist appointments for the whole family. I hope you feel better soon! Ouch!
I've heard those things hurt like a bitch. I don't even know if I have them though. If I do, they don't hurt.
I would encourage you to bite the bullet and get them out - at least the abcessed one (asap). They will get worse and the pain isn't worth it. Plus, there's the ice cream to consider...
Ok, the abcess means it's time to get them out before something worse happens. Although it's good to know they weren't impacted or really hurting the rest of your mouth by pushing your teeth around. That happens too.
Either way, lots of luck. I hear they put you to sleep for the procedure so at least you won't have to remember it. ;)
It took me almost a year to finally give in and have mine removed. I couldn't eat the last month. Why didn't I lose any weight? SIGH!
Finally went to an oral surgeon and he took them all out at once. It was the day before Thanksgiving. I did fine and even was able to eat turkey the next day.
Oh, I have so been there and every so often, there again. I still got my wisdom teeth and probably always will. My hubby got his pulled and I don't have time to be all whacked out for a few days like he was.
Hope you are feeling better real soon. If nothing else works, wine always seems to dull the pain for me :)
Owie....try orajel to relieve the pain!
Or...just get them removed! I'm not claiming to be a wizard or anything, but I'm guessing this would be the smartest idea! :-)
Uh-Oh! I've heard whiskey will help. Rub some on, drink some, then rub some more on. (or not!)
I am 38 and STILL have all of my wisdom teeth - I cancelled my appointment to get them pulled and have been hoping to outwit the dentist.
Now I am going to politely plug my ears and go "la-la-la" to ignore all the comments or thoughts about the pain from an abscess!
I'm going with everyone here telling you to just do it and get them out. I finally had to do it when I was in college because I had one hard impacted and one soft impacted. I had pain from my jaw down to my butt, no joke. Just do it. They'll put you under, and you get great drugs. ; ) And if they're abscessed, you really need to get 'em done. Sorry. :(
oh dear....anxious to hear what you did. eeeekkkk...
hugs for you though. that sucks.
ow! hang in there...
Owch.
They hurt!
I finally had mine out a couple years ago. It sucked, but at least its done.
Take care of yourself.
I still have mine and very similar stories..I had one filled when I was pregnant two years ago.. All my dentists have wanted them gone, but it just hasn't worked out..
I want the wisdom.
I actually acted like a grown-up and got some medicine. I know that I need to have them removed, but it's going to be surgery (naturally, it couldn't be simple), and, as Boogiemum said, who has time?
I have all four of my wisdom teeth, too. One of them is falling apart and I'm so afraid to do anything about it, but I think this post is the kick in the butt I need to go to the dentist. Imagine having your wisdom teeth pulled at 28?? Weird.
The surgery isn't that bad (may be worse with an infection). I had my cut out in the morning, was home in the afternoon and was eating normally the next day.
Go get it done!
yikes...I am just reading this now! Hope the meds have kicked in! I still have all 4 of mine, and they have only started bothering me in the past few years, but I was always pregnant or nursing. At this rate, I'll be close to 40 before I can get them removed!
Ouch! I feel for ya ... truly! Actually I still have all of my wisdom teeth (how dumb is that?) but so far ... so good. I'm 63 and counting ... and just maybe I'll never have trouble. (typing with fingers crossed is challenging ya know). Good luck with yours.
Hugs and blessings,
