Review: Taming Rafe

Boy meets girl. Boy and girl hate each other due to some colossal misunderstanding. Boy and girl fall in love in spite of themselves. It's a standard romance novel plot, and with good reason; when it's done well, it works.

In Taming Rafe (Tyndale House Publishers 2007), Susan May Warren does it well. Bad boy bull rider Rafe Noble first meets heiress Katherine Breckenridge when he literally crashes into her ritzy New York fundraiser. Furious and desperate for donations to save her charitable foundation, Katherine follows Rafe back to his Montana ranch to demand his help. There, she discovers a part of herself that she never knew existed, and a man that just might be everything she longs for.

Oh, stop rolling your eyes! A gazillion Harlequin romances sold every year, but nobody's reading them . . .

All joking aside, I really enjoyed this book. It's simply a good story. Warren uses all of the traditional elements of the genre to great advantage: a hero to swoon over, a heroine to root for, a bad guy to hate, a little danger. When you throw in the cowboy angle, well . . . I do love the cowboys! Good stuff.

Taming Rafe is classified as "christian romance," and I suppose it is. Faith is a crucial element of the story, but that element of the story is handled so deftly that it feels natural and real. I did not feel as if I was being proselytized or hit repeatedly with a hammer.

Overall, Taming Rafe is a good read. And, don't you love that cover? Cowboy, take me away!
